Optimisation considering uncertainty

By making most of the data we create the models of the process and uncertainties involved. With these models we can optimise every aspect of the processes, resources and costs.

When considering uncertainty, optimisation can be guided for resilience or variable plans.

For Oil & Gas:
Process and cost optimisation

We have a system to optimise the use of resources, plans and availability of machines. Our tool will allow resilient planning and to define predictive maintenance.

The models along with the optimised plans can feed an effective information portal/dashboard to create effective communication across the stakeholders. The right information will reach the right person.

For airports:
Optimise resources at security and improve customer service

By increasing the dwell time in the departure lounge the more money a passenger is likely to spend. The happier a passenger is when they get to the departure lounge - the more money they are likely to spend. Therefore if you can optimise security resources by more accurate scheduling to increase flow and control queue lengths, there is an opportunity to improve customer service and increase profitability of the airport.

Q-Alert is designed to forecast passenger demand, and therefore security requirements, weeks and months in advance with the aim of improving the flow of passengers through security by smoothing queue times throughout the day. Users can see both graphically and in a downloadable table when security lanes need to be open and closed and what effect this will have on queue times. This information is then used to schedule security resource.

In addition to this the historical information can then be used to analyse and assess key drivers of airport retail profitability, namely:

  • What is the value/potential value to retail of passenger by time of day?
  • Which flights contribute more revenue through the day?
  • Where is the cut off between value from increased retail revenue and business lost due to poor customer service?

Q-Alert can also be set up to provide alerts in real time based on certain criteria being met. This allows operational management to make decisions based on a situation that has changed in a very short timeframe giving up to 60 minutes notice of potential peaks or troughs in demand occurring.

VenueSim was asked to present Q-Alert at the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe Facilitation & Customer Service Committee meeting in Nice on the 6th May 2010.

This event was attended by many senior airport personnel from across Europe who are interested in hearing about best practice within the airport sector.

As improvements in passenger flows and customer service levels are top priorities for airports - and hence ACI - Q-Alert is seen as an ideal product to help make improvements in both areas. Headquartered in Geneva ACI is a non-profit-making organisation representing over 1,530 airports in 175 countries and territories worldwide.
